ABOUT

There is always a moment of magic, of  excitement and surprise when I connect light to material and everything takes on, a new and unexpected form.

I take a walk outside, in the woods, on a beach, in the fields. The special sculpted interesting branches are always there – waiting for someone to discover them. Sometimes they dictate and determine the shape of the sculpture. Sometimes they are wide open to ideas

I made my first lamp-sculpture at a time when I needed, perhaps, a little light – right in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

As an architect, for many years I designed museums, galleries, restoration of historic buildings ,public and private projects – each with its own story. When the pandemic broke out, I was in the middle of planning a project. When we met on site I said

to the clients : “Here, in the conference room, we lack light. A special sculptured lamp should stand here.” But outside there was Corona, and all the shops were closed.

It occurred to me to try and build the lamp I had seen in my imagination. A month later, it stood on the table and lit up for the first time.

This was my first lamp. After it, the second one was ordered, and I fell in love with sculpting light and material.

The lamps are all made from natural, handmade materials, mine.

The skeleton is made from natural wood pieces, iron wires and wooden canes. The body – different types of paper that I make, sometimes combined with leaves and stems. Often the wood pieces dictate the shape of the sculpture. Sometimes the idea exists before the work and sometimes the a specific theme is requested in advance (like a sunflower, a Flamingo   or even a Harley Davidson motorcycle)
